“What Lies Within,” a mixed media art installation for the lobby of Still Waters Adult Day Eastgate Center
“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Water covers 70% of the earth’s surface and makes up 60% of our bodies.  Water, along with air, is the basis of life.

The artist, Sofiya Inger, envisioned a large work of art that uses the theme of water to capture both the soothing as well as the energizing qualities of the Still Waters Center.  “Our goal was to create a beautiful, iconic piece of art that will comfort and inspire all who experience it,” said Sofiya.

Sofiya led weekly art-making groups at Still Waters from early 2016 to spring 2017.  During summer 2017, she led a series of art-making workshops in the Eastgate neighborhood for residents, pre-school children, and residents of a local nursing facility. These workshops allowed a wide variety of community members to participate in art-making and contribute to the final work.

The installation includes fabrics, mirrors, found objects, light, and translucent panels and covers an area of approximately 150 square feet in the lobby of Still Waters Adult Day Eastgate Center.  Sofiya Inger is an Indianapolis mixed media artist who has extensive experience working with special populations including persons with Dementia.

“What Lies Within” was funded in part by a Challenge America Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.   Watch our new video that outlines the project from start to finish and read what Nuvo thought of the finished piece.
